Francis Parnell Murphy
by Samuel R. Guard and Lloyd Graham, 1940
This book measures 8" X 5 3/4" and has
144 pages. Francis Parnell Murphy was born Aug 16th, 1877 and died Dec
19th, 1958. He was the governor of New Hampshire from 1937 until 1941.
Governor Murphy supported much New Deal legislation,
particularly legislation which supported labor rights. This is to me fairly
interesting since Murphy had twelve shoe manufacturing
plants and his J.F. McElwain Company was the largest employer of labor in New
Hampshire. He also had the traditional New Hampshire concern for sound
budgeting. In order to ease homeowners' tax burdens, he eliminated the state tax
on real estate in favor of a new tax on tobacco products.
When Murphy retired as governor in 1941, he made one last
effort at political life, campaigning against Styles Bridges for the U.S. Senate
seat in 1942. When Murphy lost that election, by 15,000 votes, he returned to
his business interests. He established Radio Voice of New Hampshire, Inc, which
became radio station WMUR. When television came he set up WMUR-TV.
