These volumes measure 6 7/8" x 4 1/2".
The body
of the text is set in Caslon and it is believed there were 900 sets printed on Dickinson
Dekel-edge paper. The bindings are suede and generally have not stood up well
to the test of time. The frontispiece is a photogravure of Elbert Hubbard with
the title printed in 2 colors on Japan Vellum.
The first mention of The Legacy that I know of was in the September 1896
Philistine. Once again Hubbard has grandiose plans and states that this
two volume set will be bound in Vellum, where have we heard that before? The
October 1896 Philistine states the same classic vellum binding with a few hand
illuminated. In November 1896 we now have the Philistine add stating that the
book is bound in Bottle Green Chamois, silk lined, price $3.00 for the set. These books are listed in
the 1899 catalog and sold for $3.00
