A Message to Garcia
"A Message to Garcia"
published by the Roycrofters. The booklet is on heavy stock with smooth edged
and string binding. This booklet is interesting because it is the standard
Garcia but printed on a deep blue stock! It is a WM. H. Wise & Co. Edition. It
has a 1917 copyright by the Roycrofters. Of interest is the letter which was
included with the booklet on Roycroft letterhead and dated May 5th 1920. The
letter is a promo letter that accompanied the book. It explains the booklet is a
"freebie" and how it was written by the great Elbert Hubbard. The letter says
that there have been over 40 million copies printed and that this edition was
published for "private distribution." The letter goes on to state how a
representative from the Roycrofters will be on their way to your city to take
your order. The letter ends by saying Joaquin Miller, our California poet
remarked on hearing of his (Hubbard's) death: "Elbert Hubbard was the only man in
America who had the English language firmly by the tail!". The letter is signed
by Elbert Hubbard the second. It is quite a "boast" letter. It appears these
Messages were printed in 17 and were left over stock used in 20 and that Hubbard
being like his father a salesman pushes this edition as a "special edition."
Interesting. Any info on this booklet would be helpful. Bound with cord, Wm. H.
Wise & Co. 1917. This booklet measures 6" x 5".
