Self Reliance
Pictures and note courtesy of Dick Blacher. Description by Paul Jackson
Self Reliance
by Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1906
#22 of 100 Copies
Note: Many of Avery’s designs, including this one, were featured in early
Roycroft catalogues.
This book measures 8 1/4" x 5 3/8" and has 51 pages. The text body is Bruce Roman on Roycroft handmade, watermarked paper. The title page and colophon are printed in two colors, (black and green) with the text body in black. The regular edition was bound in suede with an edition of 100 bound 3/4 Levant or full Levant and printed on Japan Vellum.
Harry Avery was among the first of
Kinder's students, I've found very little information about his life. His
particular forte as a binder was the use of inlays. Unlike Dick Wolfe in his
book on Kinder and Dave Ogle in his forthcoming book on the Roycroft, On a High
Shelf, I feel strongly that Avery's bindings are among the very best and most
sophisticated produced at the Roycroft Shop. Notice the use of inlays in this
binding.
