Sesame and Lilies
by John Ruskin, 1897
Illumined by Fannie Stiles
This book measures 7 3/4" x 4 7/8"
and has 142 pages. Text body is Antiqua Old Style and 450 copies were printed in
2 colors on Whatman paper and hand illuminated. The binding is paper over boards
with a white Buckram spine. 40 copies had special hand illumination and a few
copies were bound in 3/4 and full Levant. The whole edition was numbered and
signed by or for Elbert Hubbard in his name. The Reverend Charles C. Albertson
was the pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church, Rochester, New York.
Additionally the Roycroft published a pamphlet in 1909 where Elbert Hubbard and
the Reverend Albertson debated whether Christianity was declining. The pamphlet
was entitled "Hubbard-Albertson, Is
Christianity Declining? A Debate".
The June 1897 edition of the Philistine
announces the preparation of Sesame and Lilies for Christmas delivery.
Interestingly the same add lists a Christmas delivery date for The Essays of
Elia which was not printed until 1899.
