Smoke Over America
by Dr. Jesse Mercer Gehman
This book measures 8 3/4" X 6" and has
572 pages. This book is to the best of my knowledge the last book printed at the
Roycroft Press. As of 1939 the Press had passed out of the Hubbard family and
there are no books known to have been published in 1939. There were a few books
published in 1940, 1941 and this final book in 1943. In 1943, Charles "Cy" Rosen
was working for Kenworthy Publishing Company in Buffalo New York. This book was
printed at Kenworthy and bound at the Roycroft bindery. The book was finished on
May 7th 1943.
Dr. Gehman worked as an editor for Bernarr Macfadden in the 1920s, wrote one of
the earliest books warning of the dangers of cigarette smoke in the 1930s (Smoke
Over America) and served as president of both the American Vegetarian Union
and the American Naturopathic Society. This
book is basically an anti-smoking treatise.
